Workshop

From June 11th to June 15th of 2017 our project group went to the United Kingdom, on an excursion. By visiting several agencies and universities, we could get insights of experts and public regarding Brexit and its effects on environmental protection.

At the University of Liverpool we also took part as guests on the seminar "Implications of Brexit for Environmental Assesment in the UK", Organised by IAIA Ireland-UK Branch and Environmental Assessment & Management Research Centre. During the seminar our team had the opportunity to execute a workshop we had been working on during the preparation weeks of our Fabric.

The game developed for the workshop was called "Brexit in Turn", and consists on a roleplay game. Each participant got a role of a representant of an important institution or company. A part of this group was dsignated to be Pro-Brexit, while the other group would be Anti-Brexit. Some of the participants were attributed the role of public, which was impartial and their opinions would vary according to the arguments of the other players. On the screen there was a fake article, created by our team, concerning Brexit issues. The task of each participant was to react to the news using mechanisms provided to them from our Glossary.

As the game would move on, new articles would pop-up and the participants would have to adapt their actions. The goal was to get public acceptance and support.

By observing our guests playing the game, we could improve our perspective on how resilient or vulnerable a situation can be under power shifts. We could also improve our glossary, adding new moves proposed by the people playing. All of the participants had a very positive feedback, highlighting that the game was a very fun and educational way to get more knowledge on the process of public participation.

Got curious? You can also play the game with your class or project group!
